Andrew Tindall is Chief Growth Officer at System1, the advertising research company behind the Test Your Ad platform, where he leads the advertising research business and its global partnerships with the world's largest brands, agencies and media owners. He is one of the loudest practical voices in marketing effectiveness — a LinkedIn influencer with a following in the six figures, the author of "Compound Creativity", and a regular stage presence at Cannes Lions. He joined Boringly Effective to argue the case for testing the right work, not all the work.
Key ideas
- Only work with something to lose deserves testing. Creative testing should follow the assets that have the reach, investment and consistency to matter — not every social post a brand ships.
- Good advertising makes people feel something. "What I actually find is that good advertising makes a broad set of people, anyone, feel something, and it interests them" — emotion is not the opposite of effectiveness; it is the mechanism.
- AI prediction does not remove human response. Models trained on past data can forecast attention, but they compress toward a commodity: "It's clearly going to end up in a commodity."
- AI is a production choice, not a strategy. "AI is just another f***ing camera. It's just one way of making ads" — craft still signals effort, and the brands that win will use AI to make more of what already works.
- B2B work is not exempt from emotion. Even business buyers are humans making decisions; B2B advertising that feels nothing achieves nothing.
